Has Xml programming had its day?

Jeremy Miller posed the question Can we declare programming in Xml to be dead yet, though it isn’t dead yet I would like to think that we will soon be able to declare the dark days of the mid-2000’s fling with programming by Xml files to dead.

There was a time when the answer to everything was to get Xml involved; to me Xml seemed like a bit of a fad, even though there’s no denying how useful it can be I think it was over-used, in ways it wasn’t planned to be used (a bit like tables for layout), so I am pleased to see that the tides are turning on this. I have suffered the hbm.xml files of NHibernate and am looking forward to giving Fluent NHibernate some attention. I don’t think there’s a real suggestion that Xml will cease to be useful but was there any need for Microsoft Office documents to become docx, xlsx, pptx (etcx Tongue out) other than to go with the trend? I don’t think so.
