Let me know what you think

In a recent post “Let Me Know What You Think” (which I have shamelessly taken the title for this post from), Davy Brion notes that the large majority of people who read blogs don’t leave comments. In A milestone in blogging – 102 posts! I said that comments are how the blogger learns which posts people cared enough about to voice their opinion. Positive comments are nice and will make me feel warm and happy, but I’m just as pleased to get negative comments as they can be a great way for me to learn about other perspectives.

It will be interesting to see how often the new star rating feature on Davy’s site is used – it is much quicker to rate a post than it is to write a comment.

As Davy says “don’t be afraid to let me know what you think when you read a post, either through a comment or through a rating”

According to modern Usability research from Nielsen/Norman 10% of posters account for 90% of content on forums/blogs/websites.  This percentage seems to be increasing over time, so for every comment you get you can reasonably assume at least 10 views from lurkers.

On my personal blog I get very few comments too. Definitely not 10% of readers. I use my analytics tracking to see which pages people found the most interesting and spent the most time on. But it really would be nice to get some feedback from my readers in the comments.

I've just looked at my stats in feedburner and have at its peak I was getting 13 subscribers, currently its 8. Google Analytic says I get about 140 hits a week I'm not sure how well that tallies up.

Looking at my most popular pages there is an emphasis on some technical content and I will be trying to write more articles of that sort. I'm a bit apprehensive of simply doing 'another post on...', but maybe that's what I should be doing?
